New York Safety Laws for Home Owners

A new law will go into effect Feb. 22, 2010, to help protect New Yorkers from deadly carbon monoxide. The act, known as "Amanda's Law," was passed on Aug. 26, 2009.  CO gas alarms must be installed in all new and existing one- and two-family dwellings, multifamily dwellings and rentals having a fuel-burning appliance, system or attached garage. But don't wait until the law goes into effect to protect your family.

Owners of one- and two-family residences must install and maintain a smoke detector that provides an audible alarm within each sleeping area. This gives sleeping residents an early warning of a night-time fire, which is most likely to go undetected and cause loss of life. 2007 Residential Code of New York State:[F] R313.1 Smoke alarms.
